WE BELIEVE architecture is a tool for crafting a well-designed life, and our lives are rooted at home. This is our starting point. What we shape influences our well-being, our productivity, our interactions, and our memories of a life well-lived. Through an intimate and collaborative process between our team, clients, and builders we seek to create a home that reflects the individual and elevates the day-to-day.
DOMA A+D is a boutique design practice, offering a full range of architectural services. With offices in Washington D.C., we extend our services throughout the metropolitan area.
OUR TEAM
Alexander Smith | NCARB
Alex has always believed that designing is a way of life and not a profession; that we continuously look out into the world and ask how can we make it better. At an early age, Alex excelled at art and mathematics, and developed a love for history and travel; leading to an almost natural progression to the profession of architecture.
Alex started his career designing custom modern homes in Dallas, Texas after receiving his Bachelor’s of Architecture from Oklahoma State University. He pursued a Master’s of Architecture from Cornell University, where he then joined Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects working on master planning projects and tower designs in China, Vietnam and the U.S. In 2014, Alex established roots with his family in Washington, DC and once again followed his passion for designing single family homes. He sought out experiences at some of the top residential design firms- including Hamilton Snowber, Jones & Boer, and Thomson & Cooke.
Norman Foster said “(we) design for the present, with an awareness of the past for a future…unknown.” The design of every house begins with a single idea, shaped by the individual personas of each of our clients. Alex believes that design draws a distinction between what we want vs. what we need, creating a uniquely personal answer to what makes a house a home.
Katharine Scott | NCARB
We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us. A sense of place and the meaning of ‘home’ have both inspired and guided Katie throughout her career. Katie is a native Washingtonian, who spent much of her childhood exploring the architecture, art, and gardens of the city she and her family continue to call home. These experiences were the foundation for her appreciation of the built environment and her awareness of its influence on the human experience.
Katie’s collegiate and professional experiences trained her in both contemporary and traditional design, as well as in architectural theory. Recognizing her calling at an early age, Katie pursued opportunities at several of D.C.’s leading firms, including Cole Prevost and Donald Lococo Architects. After receiving her Bachelor’s of Architecture from Cornell University in 2003, Katie joined Lehman Smith + McLeish, overseeing commercial projects in Belgium, the U.K., and throughout the U.S.
Katie’s connection to architecture is deeply rooted in residential work. She returned to residential practice, joining Hamilton Snowber Architects in 2014, where she cultivated her skills in historic work and single-family residences, prior to establishing DOMA A+D.
Katie is also an alumna of Georgetown Visitation and the Maret School in Washington, D.C.
